I don’t want any adventures, thank you.Step 4-Meeting the Mentor: Gandalf and the Dwarves visit the hole’ of Bilbo Baggins for tea and plan a quest to reclaim the dwarves’ treasure and their former home in the mountain, which was stolen by the dragon Smaug.

There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself.Step 5-Crossing the Threshold:Chapter 2: Roast MuttonThe dwarves set off the next morning without Bilbo but leave a note that they shall await at the Green Dragon Inn, Bywater at 11am and so with Gandalf’s help Bilbo quickly follows to catch up.That’s how they came to start, jogging off from the Inn one fine morning just before May. At first they passed through Hobbit lands inhabited by decent folk. Then they came to lands where people spoke strangely. Now they had gone on far into the Lone-lands, where there were no people. Not far ahead were dreary hills, rising higher and higher, dark with trees. On some of them were old castles with an evil look as if built by wicked people.Step 6-Tests, Allies, EnemiesTests: Escaping enemiesAllies: ElvesEnemies: Trolls, Goblins, Gollum, Spiders, Wood-Elves, SmaugChapter 2: Roast MuttonThe Company (The 13 Dwarves and Bilbo Baggins) are caught by Trolls but with Gandalf’s help, they escape.Suddenly a red light shone out very brightnot far ahead. Now it is the burglar’s turn..find out all about that light, and if its perfectly safe said Thorin to the hobbitBut they were trolls. Obviously trolls.This is Bilbo’s first test as a burglar, but when he attempts to pick pocket a troll he is caught, and all the dwarves are also captured. As the troll prepares to eat the dwarves, Gandalf secretly returns to help, and tricks the trolls into arguing until dawn, when the sunlight turns them to stone, saving Bilbo and the dwarves. Chapter 3: A Short RestGandalf leads Bilbo and the dwarves to Rivendell, where their allies the elves provide food and rest and sow the way to the Misty Mountains. Gandalf says We need food, and rest in reasonable safety. Hidden somewhere ahead of us is the fair valley of Rivendell where Elrond (the Elf Lord) lives. Elrond was as noble and fair in face as an elf-lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves and as kind as summer.Elrond helps the dwarves to read the runes of the maps. After resting the company rode away with their hearts ready for more adventure.Chapter 4: Over Hill and Under HillClimbing the mountains the company are caught in a thunder storm and seek shelter in a cave. More terrible still are thunder and lightning in the mountains. Bilbo had never seen anything or imagined anything of the kind. He saw across the valley the stone giants were hurling rocks at one another. Then came wind and rain.Killi and Filli, who were sent to look for shelter. We have found a dry cave not far.But the cave is inhabited by Goblins who capture the company. Out jumped the goblins, big goblins, great ugly goblins, lots of goblins. They seized Bilbo and the dwarves although Gandalf escaped.The goblins dislike the dwarves and hate elves and are enraged when they see the elf sword. Murderers and elf-friends! Slash them, Beat them! Bite them! Just at that moment all the lights went out, and the great fire went off poof! The sparks were burning holes in the goblins. Follow me quick! Said a voice fierce and quite. Of course it was Gandalf.However, the goblins soon silently follow and grab Dori who is carrying Bilbo.The hobbit rolled off his shoulders, bumped his head and remembered noting moreStep 6 (continued) Further Tests, Allies, Enemies(Bilbo escapes the Goblins and Gollum)Chapter 5: Riddles in the DarkBilbo awakes and crawling in the dark finds a small ring He put the ring in his pocket, it did not seem of particular use at this moment Bilbo pulls out his elf-made sword and wanders until finds himself near an underground lake, watched by Gollum; Suddenly without any warning he trotted splash into water! Ugh! It was icy cold.Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. He was watching Bilbo now with his pale eyes. What iss he my preciouss? whispered Gollum (who always spoke to himself through never having anyone else to speak to)They agree to play riddles and if Bilbo wins, Gollum will show him the way out of the mountain. Bilbo feels the ring in his pockets asks aloud what have I got in my pocket?. Although not a riddle, Gollum cannot guess what is in Bilbo’s pocket and gets angry. He returns to his island in the lake to get his magic ring that makes him invisible, planning to kill Bilbo, and realises it has been lost and that Bilbo has found it. As Gollum chases Bilbo, the ring makes Bilbo invisible and he follows Gollum to the way out of the mountain, escapes the goblins and joins Gandalf and the dwarves in safety.Step 6 (continued) Further Tests, Allies, Enemies(Bilbo escapes the Goblins and Wolves with the help of the Eagles)Enemies: Goblins, Wolves (Wargs)Allies: The EaglesChapter 6: Out of the Frying Pan into the FireThe Bilbo, the dwarves and Gandalf continue on, knowing the Goblins will soon be after them again.Yet soon they are chased by wolves All of a sudden they heard a howl away downhill. It was wolves gathering together (or wild Wargs as evil wolves over the Edge if the Wild are named). The Wargs and the Goblins often helped one another in wicked deedsWhat shall we do! Escaping Goblins to be caught by wolves!Up the trees, quick! Cried GandalfGandalf attacks the wolves below by throwing fire onto them.Wolves are afraid of fire at all times, but this was a most horrible fire.Meanwhile the noise and flames get the attention of the eagles far away.What is all this uproar in the forest tonight? said the Lord of the Eagles, I hear wolves! Are the Goblins at mischief in the woods?The eagle attack the Goblins and wolves and rescue the company, and carry them further on in their journey.
