Assignment: Academic Success And Professional Development Plan Part 6: Finalizing The Plan. At some point in every construction project, efforts turn from design and the focus moves to actual construction. With the vision in place and the tools secured, the blueprint can be finalized and approved. Then it is time to put on hardhats and begin work.

Throughout the course you have developed aspects of your Academic and Professional Development Plan. You have thought a great deal about your vision and goals, your academic and professional network of support, research strategies and other tools you will need, the integrity of your work, and the value of consulting the work of others. With your portfolio in place, it is now time to finalize your blueprint for success.

Much as builders remain cognizant of the building standards as they plan and begin construction, nurses must remain mindful of the formal standards of practice that govern their specialties. A good understanding of these standards can help ensure that your success plan includes any steps necessary to excel within your chosen specialty.

In this Assignment you will continue developing your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan by developing the final component–a review of your specialty standards of practice. You will also submit your final version of the document, including Parts 1–5.

Finalizing the Academic and Professional Development Plan
Standards of practice are essential guidelines that help ensure safe, competent, and ethical nursing care. For the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner specialty I have chosen to pursue, the American Nurses Association (ANA) and American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) establish the key standards.
The ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2020) outlines the broad ethical responsibilities and duties applicable to all registered nurses. It addresses principles such as advocacy, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and others that form the foundation of the profession.
More specifically, the APNA Standards of Practice (APNA, 2022) delineate the scope and expectations for psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners. There are seven standards covered: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation, collaboration, and education. Some notable aspects within these standards include conducting comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments, developing differential diagnoses, creating individualized treatment plans, ensuring informed consent from clients, providing culturally-sensitive care, engaging in interprofessional collaboration, and promoting health through teaching and coaching activities.
Adhering to nursing standards of practice helps guarantee that care is delivered safely, competently and ethically, while also protecting the integrity of the psychiatric nurse practitioner role. It is important that I have a firm understanding of how these standards apply to daily work and use them to continually improve the quality of my future practice.
In my Nursing Specialty Comparison Matrix, I evaluated psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and family nurse practitioner (FNP) specializations based on setting, population, role and responsibilities. While both were appealing options, I ultimately selected PMHNP due to my strong interest in mental healthcare, desire to conduct psychotherapy, and ability to independently prescribe psychotropic medications in most states unlike FNPs. Feedback from colleagues in discussion forums affirmed my specialty choice.
The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is the premier professional organization for PMHNPs. As an active member, I will be able to stay informed on evidence-based practice advances and standard revisions through conferences and journals. Networking opportunities can also help expand my professional support system. Leadership roles may allow me to give back to the specialty. Ensuring my APNA membership supports my goal of ongoing professional development.
In summary, comprehending and applying relevant nursing standards of practice is fundamental to providing safe, competent and ethical psychiatric-mental health care. The APNA standards offer excellent guidance for the PMHNP role. Membership with APNA will aid my success as a PMHNP by facilitating lifelong learning and leadership growth. This finalizes my Academic and Professional Development Plan.

. My approach in identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed reach is to assess the quality of articles submitted for publication in the scholarly journal. The author of an article must submit it to the journal editor, who will then forward the article to experts in the field which is consider the “peer review”. The peer review are charged with careful evaluate the quality of the submit manuscript. After which they now check the manuscript for accuracy and assess the validity of the research methodology and procedures, if appropriate and accurate, they will suggest revisions. A peer reviewed journal will not be published articles that fail to meet the standards established for a given discipline, peer reviewed that are accepted articles that are accepted for publication exemplify the best research practices in a field.

. Two strategies that you I would use that I found to be effective in the finding peer-reviewed research are 1. Does the article have been published in a scholarly journal and 2. Is the journal in which I found the article published or sponsored by professional scholarly society; professional association or university academic department. Does it describe itself as a peer-reviewed?

. One research I intended to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research; is to search the online library databases. Many of which include peer-reviewed journals, read the databases description to determine if it features peer-reviewed articles. When search for articles, choose the advanced search option on the search screen to look for a checkbox that allows you to limit results to peer-reviewed only.

I have developed a curriculum vitae to capture my academic and professional accomplishments to date. I have also developed a statement identifying one or more professional development goals, and a statement proposing how I might align one or more of these professional development goals with the University’s emphasis on social change.
