The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) is a high-stakes exam that nursing students must pass in order to obtain theirNCLEX-RN) is a high-stakes exam that nursing students must pass in order to obtain their nursing license and begin practice (NCSBN, 2022). First-time pass rates are an important metric for evaluating nursing program quality and student preparedness (Crow et al., 2019). This paper analyzes secondary data to identify factors influencing first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates.
Methods
Secondary data were obtained from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) regarding NCLEX-RN first-time pass rates from 2016-2021 for a large public university in the southeastern United States. Data included demographic characteristics of graduates (gender, age, race/ethnicity), prelicensure program characteristics (program type, enrollment size), and academic performance measures (GPA, standardized exam scores). Descriptive statistics characterized the sample and bivariate analyses using chi-square tests evaluated relationships between variables.
Results
A total of 1,235 graduates were included in the analysis. The overall first-time pass rate was 80.2%. Female graduates (81.4% pass rate) outperformed males (75.5%, p = 0.04). White graduates had higher pass rates than underrepresented minorities (81.7% vs. 75.6%, p = 0.01). Baccalaureate degree graduates passed at a higher rate than associate degree graduates (82.1% vs. 75.3%, p < 0.001). Higher GPAs and standardized exam scores correlated with improved pass rates (Crow et al., 2019; Trofino, 2013).
Discussion
This analysis identified gender, race, degree type, GPA, and standardized exam performance as factors impacting first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates. Targeted remediation for at-risk student groups may help reduce disparities in outcomes. Larger, more diverse samples could provide additional insights. Limitations include the use of secondary data from a single institution.
