Although the book itself is fiction, in interviews Stockett has claimed growing up in Mississippi, her grandmother’s family had a maid, Demetrie, with whom she was very close. “I loved Demetrie dearly, and I felt so loved too,” Stockett says. “I think another reason my siblings and I had such a close relationship with Demetrie is that she never had children of her own. She’d grown up poor and lived with an abusive husband. When a person has that much sadness and kindness wrapped up inside, sometimes it just pours out as gentleness. She was a gentle soul. Although Aibileen goes through many trials and tribulations in the novel (her son dies, Hilly is terribly cruel to her, she ultimately loses her job and Mae Mobley her last “baby”), she remains graceful throughout the entire novel. Aibileen is not revengeful or spiteful. And nearly all of the white women in the book have children, or are expecting and are married.rnHilly, the antagonist (and the ringleader of all of the women in town), seems to be a good mother, but is quite unkind and vindictive to Aibileen and Minny.
