Assignment: Practicum – Week 2 Journal Entry (Due in Week 4)
Learning Objectives

Students will:

Develop diagnoses for clients receiving psychotherapy*
Analyze legal and ethical implications of counseling clients with psychiatric disorders*

Select a client whom you observed or counseled this week. Then, address the following in your Practicum Journal:

Describe the client (without violating HIPAA regulations) and identify any pertinent history or medical information, including prescribed medications.
Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), explain and justify your diagnosis for this client.
Explain any legal and/or ethical implications related to counseling this client.
Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

This assignment is asking you to reflect on a client you observed or counseled during your practicum this week, and develop a diagnosis for them using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5). Additionally, you are asked to analyze any legal and ethical implications related to counseling this client and support your approach with evidence-based literature.

To complete this assignment, it is recommended that you review the DSM-5, as well as the American Psychiatric Association’s Practice Guidelines for the Psychiatric Evaluation of Adults, and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Practice Parameters for the Psychiatric Assessment of Children and Adolescents.

When describing the client, you should provide a brief overview of their background, including any pertinent history or medical information, as well as any prescribed medications, without violating HIPAA regulations.

When providing a diagnosis, you should use the criteria outlined in the DSM-5, and provide a detailed explanation and justification for your diagnosis.

When discussing legal and ethical implications, you should consider any relevant laws or regulations that may apply to the client’s treatment, as well as any ethical considerations related to the diagnosis and treatment of this client.

Finally, you should support your approach with evidence-based literature, by referencing any relevant research or professional guidelines that support your diagnosis and treatment plan.
