She’s fourth grade class went on a field trip to the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Was amongst those students that very day. I then attended all of the various exhibits and different sections they had for each genre of rock n’ roll, which led me to an exhibit named, “Penetrate”. Decided to pick up the headphones and tune in to a guitar solo lead by guitarist of Penetrate, “Damage’ Darrell. The sounds of his guitar were something I have never heard before. Was immediately captivated by his guitar solo, thus starting my journey into the “realm of rock”.
I grew up on he East side of Cleveland which was a predominantly African American side of town. Ran into a culture that was entrenched in the sounds of hip hop and rhythm and blues. Shortly after joining this different culture, I quickly realized that my favorite genre of music was not accepted.
I remember being shunned by the rest of my peers for playing my favorite music out loud. They berated me with racial slurs and showered me with derogatory comments. All because I did not succumb to the fact that my appreciation for music lies with ass’s rock n’ roll, instead of the music, people my age were accustomed to.Many of my so called friends, pondered on why I grew fond of that genre of music.
It all started with a field trip. Music from the ass’s decade was my gateway away from society when I was a teenager. Growing up without a father and a verbally abusive home, music is all that I had to turn to. I adored ass’s rock music, not only because of the sound but because of the effect it had on me mentally. Was able to guard a lot of pain and heartache with music. It helped me black out all of the negative things I endured while growing up. L, however, used music as a defense mechanism turning my back n my disaster of a household.
I turned to the streets and started hanging outside of my home and I learned a lot especially about the music people listened to. In conclusion, my journey as a teenager and the transition I made to become a man was highly influenced by the music I listened to growing up. Music can help for an identity. And with that knowledge, grew up to understand who I was as a man and as a person. It helped me grow emotionally and let me know that it was k to let go of the things that haunted me while I grew up. I guess you can say that ass’s rock saved my life.
