It started with a race between Trenton at six years old, and Playboy [or Plough], owned by Joseph Erwin at eight years old. Charles Dickinson at this time had a reputation as a socialite, a courteous gentlemen, a wealthy man, and a crack Arkansan with a pistol.

Meanwhile, the race was set to take place April 3, 1805. People from all around Middle Tennessee flocked to see the race of the year.
