The Effectiveness of Psychotherapy: A Review of Meta-Analyses

NRNP – 6640 Psychotherapy Individual s
Number of sources: 4
Paper instructions:
Psychotherapy is an approach that helps individuals with a wide assortment of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2019. Psychotherapy aims to empower the clients, reduce symptoms, prevent relapse, improve functioning and deliberate on goals set with the client (Wheeler, 2014).
Studies indicate that the biological basis of treatments can explain changes influenced by psychopharmacology. Similarly, many studies suggest that psychotherapy is an effective strategy for treating mental health issues and that it has a biological basis. Psychotherapy focuses on the brain in the manner that it develops, matures, and operates; it facilitates the integration and connection of maladaptive neural networks that arise from traumatic events, which in turn facilitates brain recovery (Shrivastava & Desousa, 2016). Young, Sandman, & Craske (2019) argue that processes in the brain region associated with negative emotion, fear, or reward are also linked to psychotherapy response as the approach affects the functioning of the areas. Medications alone should not be used to treat mental health symptoms; a provider-patient relationship must be established to help comprehend the root cause of the patient’s symptoms (Wheeler, 2014). This understanding can lead to the client’s progress
Despite the effectiveness of psychotherapy in the management of mental health disorders, issues such as culture, religion, and socioeconomics may still influence the individual perspective of the value of psychotherapy. The use of psychotherapy in treating mental health disorders is likely to cause religious, cultural, or socioeconomic conflicts. Ideally, a therapist must be aware of how those factors affect the client’s approach to the procedure and its efficacy in treatment. Culture influences life processes unconsciously; for instance, if the client’s cultural background does not allow outward expression of emotions, the use of psychotherapy may be challenging in such a scenario. Thus the therapist must maintain awareness of the influence of culture in treatment plans (Moleiro, 2018). Religion may also influence the client’s perspective. For instance, a client may have conservative religious views, which do not permit sharing intimate life experiences with people outside the religious group. Communication between the therapist and the client may be inhibited if the clinician is not aware of the religious influences on psychotherapy (Moleiro, 2018).
Socioeconomic factors can also influence individual perspectives of psychotherapy. Poverty, for example, can be associated with the development of mental health issues such as depression, substance use, and anxiety (Blair & Raver, 2016). Impoverished clients may face challenges accessing or receiving psychotherapy treatment. Populations with low social status face barriers in accessing optimal care as they correlate with their socio-economic conditions. Mental health practitioners should be sensitive to such disparity during therapy, avoid having preconceived notions, and also appreciate the differences in socioeconomic status as a possible influence on the client’s outcomes.

Title: The Effectiveness of Psychotherapy: A Review of Meta-Analyses

Authors: Bruce Wampold, Bruce Thyer, and Dennis Kivlighan

Journal: Psychological Bulletin, Vol. 126, No. 1 (January, 2000), pp. 189-215

DOI: 10.1037/0033-2909.126.1.189

This meta-analysis of 475 studies found that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The authors found that the average effect size for psychotherapy was 0.8, which is considered to be a large effect. This means that psychotherapy is twice as effective as no treatment.

The authors also found that the type of psychotherapy does not matter as much as the quality of the therapist. They found that the most important factor in determining the effectiveness of psychotherapy is the therapeutic alliance, which is the relationship between the therapist and the client.

This meta-analysis provides strong evidence that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a variety of mental health problems. It also suggests that the quality of the therapist is more important than the type of psychotherapy.

In addition to this scholarly resource, I would also like to add that psychotherapy can be a valuable tool for helping individuals to overcome challenges in their lives, such as trauma, grief, and loss. Psychotherapy can help individuals to understand their thoughts and feelings, develop coping skills, and build healthier relationships.

If you are considering psychotherapy, I encourage you to talk to your doctor or a mental health professional to learn more about the different types of therapy available and to find a therapist who is a good fit for you.
