In my current nursing position as a staff nurse in an acute care hospital, I have observed that there is a significant need for improved care for patients with alcohol withdrawal, dual diagnosis, and substance use disorders. In addition, they may have difficulty accessing appropriate treatment after they are discharged from the hospital.
One idea from the literature for a potential DNP project to address this practice problem is to develop and implement a comprehensive care plan for patients with alcohol withdrawal, dual diagnosis, and substance use disorders. This care plan would include evidence-based interventions for managing medical and psychiatric symptoms, as well as referrals to appropriate treatment resources.
The type of support needed from the organization to implement a DNP project at this or any organization would include:
