100-150 words, apa format, etc.thanks!Health Problems among Teens and Young AdultsSocial and Environmental Factors/ Family EnvironmentSocial and environmental factors play a large role in teens and young adults decision making. Social factors such as entertainment, social media, friends and school are a large part of this. Let's take for example food. What we see on television commercials, billboard advertisements, social media posts, and what we see our friends eating and what is provided at school is a large part of what kids eat. The same goes for exercise habits. The family environment is very influential. Unfortunately in today's society the family unit has been dissolved, and teens and young adults who are unconsciously seeking influence about healthy vs unhealthy decisions do not have the family unit to turn to. A family that is very involved in the health decisions, let's say diet, exercise and drug abstinence have a lower risk of childhood obesity and drug use. The family needs to take responsibility for today's teens and be the positive influence they so desperately need. The family also needs to teach teens to make wise decisions about filtering out what they see in the media, on television and also what their peers are involved in. Teens love to experiment and test out their independence; so it is imperative that the family stays connected to assist teens with healthy decision making skills that are applicable to real world situations.Motivates TeensTeens who form groups or gangs are struggling to "fit in", (The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2011). If they are not fitting in at home or in other areas like a church, they will seek out that structure and support network. Negative behaviors seem to get the most attention. Teens thrive on attention, whether positive or negative. Those teens and young adults who do not have a family to encourage them to make good decisions and then praise them when they do, will ultimately seek acceptance and reassurance from other sources. It is far easier to get attention by doing negative things than positive. Teens will naturally do what is going to get them the most "bang for their buck". U.S. Minority Population IssuesAfrican Americans are statistically more likely tohave heart disease and obesity, and renal disease. Caucasian Americans in a low socioeconomic status are likely to gamble and use drugs. Native Americans are most likely to abuse alcohol and have diabetes. (Healthy People, 2016). Community ProgramI would develop a community center that provided a positive influence for teens and young adults by emphasizing education, drug abstinence, healthy lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise. Exposing the at risk teen population to higher education and resources to help them make better decisions is paramount. Involving their family, if available, would also be worthwhile. Community leaders from the city such as the mayor or staff, hospital personnel like a physician, nurse, dietician or social worker could be excellent resources for the teens. It is very important to include influential people from the community in the plan for this program. Obtaining buy in from these community leaders will guarantee the longevity of such a program, and also provide for future expansion. The bigger a program like this is, the more lives can be improved.Reduce RiskStudies show that higher levels of education are associated with decreased levels of crime, drug abuse, poverty and homelessness (Ellucian, 2016). Teaching teens and providing resources for doing well in school and pursuing higher education can avoid risky behavior. To follow up and evaluate the success of this program, we can look at crime rates, average high school GPA scores, graduation rate, rate of college attendance, trend drug crimes, and others.Resource(s):The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
