My main takeaway from “A Note on the Title” chapter is that The ZX Spectrum played a significant role in influencing Fry to develop a computer program. From reading the chapter, it is evident that Fry was very excited when her father bought a ZX Spectrum for her and her sibling. Even though the computer was outdated at the time, its arrival marked the start of periods spent with her sister programming and developing codes (Fry, 2019). In short, this piece of technology served to help her master the basics of computer programming. She eventually learned to program the computer to display the ‘Hello World’ phrase on the screen ushering her into the coding world.
I do agree that programming is a collaborative endeavor; it is a moment of dialogue between human and machine. In essence, programming is the process of developing a set of instructions that tell a computer how to carry out a task (Bansal, 2013). And it achieves this through utilizing various computer programming languages like JavaScript, C++, and Python. The act of asking the computer to do something and its act of responding as demonstrated above is a form of dialogue. For programming to be successful, a human must communicate with a machine, and the machine should respond; as such, they must work collaboratively. By responding to the instructions, the machine is able to work and perform a task. Therefore, if one of the parties fails to act as required programming becomes impossible. It is also important to note that programming involves generating algorithms. For a machine to respond and generate an algorithm, the human has to write a program. Again, the human and the machine have to work together.
