A Study on the Impact of Maritime Pollution on West African Coastal Communities
1. Introduction
Maritime pollution is a global environmental problem, but it is especially severe in developing countries. According to the International Maritime Organization, the most significant causes of maritime pollution are oil, chemicals, and waste. Oil enters the oceans by accidental spills during transportation and is also released from land and offshore extraction sources. Chemicals and other hazardous substances have a wide range of sources including atmospheric deposition, land runoff, and oil spills. These result in long-term effects on marine environments such as toxicity to aquatic life and dangers to human and marine life. The most widespread health problem facing coastal communities is contaminated waters, which can result in illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, and other diseases. On a global scale, maritime pollution endangers the aquatic environment and human health. However, the study focuses on West African coastal communities because there is limited research in this area despite the fact that populations living in these areas are more vulnerable due to poor socioeconomic capacity and accessibility of healthcare. Coastline ecosystems are a critical factor in the sustainable development of coastal communities. Coastal water supports critical habitat for a vast array of diverse living organisms, and it is an essential resource for human recreation, industry, and commerce. Water quality and shoreline integrity have a great influence on the diversity and productivity of coastal ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass, and wetlands. It is well known that pollution from the land has a direct impact on coastal ecosystems. However, pollution from boats and offshore sources has not received adequate attention. It is worthwhile to engage in studying maritime pollution for raising public awareness and promoting scientific and technological advancement in maritime pollution control and management. By formulating and implementing scientific policies and conducting public education, it is envisioned that coastal communities will thrive in a clean and sustainable environment. The results of this study will provide valuable knowledge for directing policy and management efforts in West African coastal communities. Such work will also empower and engage local communities in the protection and conservation of their shared marine environment.
The study examines the impact of maritime pollution on coastal communities in West Africa. The introduction provides background information on maritime pollution and emphasizes the importance of West African coastal communities. The study aims to investigate the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of maritime pollution in this region.
1.1 Background of Maritime Pollution
The history of maritime pollution is long and complicated. Since ancient times, the sea has been used as a medium for transportation of goods, products, and people. This led to increased pollution and the contamination of water sources. However, the scale of maritime pollution has escalated in modern times with the development of technology and increased spending on global trade. In particular, pollution from ships and vessels has become a serious concern for the health and safety of marine life and materials. Yet, there is still a significant lack of awareness around maritime pollution and its effects on the environment and communities that depend on the sea for their livelihoods. This is, in part, because these kinds of disasters happen in isolated regions where the environment and the damage do not attract a massive audience. For example, when an oil spill occurred in the quiet town of Ambrish in the Far East of Russia, it was not widely reported even within Russia itself. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges is to develop a communication and understanding strategy that can convey the practical and lasting impacts of the pollution to all those who use the sea, be it for industry or recreation. At present, international law has not been hugely successful in providing a legal background to the prevention of pollution to all sectors. However, in recent years, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has worked on establishing a framework that includes regulations for the prevention of pollution, as well as requirements for compensation to ensure that economies of individual states are not shouldering all the financial burden of environmental protection.
1.2 Importance of West African Coastal Communities
Maritime pollution is a global environmental problem. The shipping industry is considered to be the largest polluter of oceans in the world. Around 4-6 million tons of garbage, of which 80% is plastic, is being deposited in the world's oceans each and every year, about 60% of which is from ships. Oil pollution is also a big problem. The amount of oil being spilled into the world's oceans is estimated to be around 1,249,493 gallons, whilst the Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster resulted in the spilling of 11 million gallons of crude oil. However, despite this, the International Maritime Organization, the regulatory authority for international shipping, is taking steps to reduce the amount pollution created by ships. This includes the International Convention of the Prevention of Pollution from ships, commonly referred to as MARPOL. However, the people who are really suffering from the consequences of maritime pollution are those who live in coastal regions. In particular, the West African coastal communities are heavily reliant on the coastal environment for their livelihoods, diet and general well-being. For example, subsidence farming is a common form of agriculture among coastal communities, due to the fertility of the coastal soils. Also, fish is the major source of animal protein in these communities and represents the most important income and source of employment. Fish products and fisheries are also important in the national economy; in Nigeria alone, fish provides over 50% of the total animal protein and the total fish production is estimated to be worth around $400 million per annum. Furthermore, the natural environment provides materials for housing, food, medicine and fuel and is home to a great variety of different species. Therefore, it is clear that the damage of maritime pollution will have serious consequences for both the environment and the people living in these communities. The natural environment provides materials for housing, food, medicine and fuel and is home to a great variety of different species. Therefore, it is clear that the damage of maritime pollution will have serious consequences for both the environment and the people living in these communities.
1.3 Purpose and Scope of the Study
In this study, I will examine the cause of the maritime pollution in Nigeria and how it is impacting the health and well-being of West African communities. I will consider not only the scale of the problem but also the fundamental issues such as ineffective legal framework and the lack of resources in environmental protection. Also, I will investigate the environmental and socio-economic consequences of the pollution in the region. By understanding the current situation and the future development of this topic, it is hoped that I will be able to gain insights into different aspects of the maritime pollution in Nigeria. My findings will suggest that not only the government needs to take more responsibility, the international community also needs to promote and enhance the coordination and cooperation of relevant oil and gas industries. Also, more pressure should be applied to make sure there is a better monitoring and law enforcement mechanism being put in place so that it will ultimately bring the reduction of the maritime pollution and benefit the well-being of West African coastal communities. My findings and recommendations provide a new angle of viewing the maritime pollution in Nigeria, it is not just discussing the environmental impact, it is also considering the improvement of legal framework and sustainability for future development. Through the research, I would like to shed light on potential solutions for combating the maritime pollution in West Africa. The intended goal of my research is to encourage evidence-based solutions of maritime pollution in West African countries and bring attention to the health and well-being needs for local communities. I hope my research and findings could contribute to the dialogue of adopting a more comprehensive and efficient management strategy and then it will ultimately lead to the minimization of the maritime pollution in the region, and promote the sustainable development of marine environment.
