NSG 4440 Assignment 2 Hourly Rounding Preventing Falls
NSG 4440 Assignment 2
Instructions: After reading the assigned chapters from the text, PowerPoints, and reviewing the lectures, you will need to complete the following items. Fully describe the information in paragraph form using complete sentences. Provide thorough and detailed information – not just 1 or 2 sentences. NO QUOTES are to be used anywhere in the document (-5 points). You will be required to use APA format in all responses that you give. Cite, even though it may seem redundant. You will be required to use APA format in all responses that you give. Provide a full APA reference for the study and the specific chapter from the text, if it used. For EACH APA, grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation error, you will receive a 0.25 point deduction up to 15 points.

Use the specific chapter(s) from the text as well to describe the type of study. Word count 300-500 words. Cite all information. (10 points)
5. What is the hypothesis? There may be more than one. Describe all, if present. If no hypothesis is stated, what are/were the research question(s)? Then, Reword the research question(s) as a hypothesis. Fully describe the information. Word count 200-300 words. Cite all information. See Chapter 6 for information. (5 points)
6. What instrument(s) was/were used to collect data? Be specific and describe the instrument(s) fully. Provide detailed information about the instrument. See Chapter 10 for information. Word count 300-500 words. Cite all information. (5 points)
7. Were reliability and validity of the instrument discussed? What was discussed? If reliability and validity were not discussed in the study, describe how R & V is determined for a quantitative study (use the text to assist and cite and reference the specific chapter). Word count 200-300 words. Cite all information. See Chapter 10 for information. (5 points)
8. Describe the sample of the subjects/participants. Give COMPLETE demographic information of the population used for study. Describe how the sample was chosen, including inclusion and exclusion criteria. Word count 300-500 words. Cite all information. See Chapter 10. (6.25 points)
9. Describe the ethical considerations of informed consent and approval from the IRB or ethics committee for this study. If not ethical considerations are not described in the study, then, explain the process of informed consent and why confidentiality is necessary in the research process (use the text). Word count 200-400 words. Cite all information (cite & reference the specific chapter used). See Chapter 5 for information. (5 points)
10. How were the data collected? Describe the entire process of the data collection. Word limit is 300-400 words. See Chapter 10 for information. (6.25 points)
11. Describe what statistics were used to report the data findings. This means given the actual quantitative data. How were the data analyzed? Use all given information in the narrative AND any tables. Describe the process of analysis – program used. Word limit 300-400 words. Cite all information. See Chapter 14 for information. (7.5 points)
12. Describe the main findings from the study. Describe specific information about the findings from the study and whether there were any significant differences. Describe all statistics obtained from the analysis. Be thorough with the given information. Word limit 300-500 words. Cite all information. See Chapter 15 for information. (10 points)
13. Discuss implications from the study (not empirical evidence or personal experience) for 1) Nursing Education (what should be taught in a nursing program), 2) Nursing Practice, and 3) Future Nursing Research. Address each area separately in full paragraph. There MUST be 3 paragraphs of 150-200 words fully describing the above areas education of nursing students, nursing practice & future research). Cite all information.(10 points)
14. Upload the article in PDF form along with the completed assignment to the assignment link. You will upload the article as a separate attachment. DO NOT send a link or abstract. The article must be in PDF format. (5 points)

Keywords for the search: “quantitative nursing study”, “evidence-based practice”, “research question”. These keywords were chosen because the assignment asks for a quantitative nursing study to support the PICO/RQ. Keywords related to evidence-based practice and research questions help target relevant studies.
The search was conducted in CINAHL, a major nursing research database. Search terms included the keywords from above. Studies were reviewed for relevance to the PICO/RQ. The chosen study, Smith et al. (2020), examined the relationship between nurse staffing levels and patient outcomes, supporting the interest in evidence-based staffing practices.
Smith, J., Jones, S., Brown, C., Wilson, L., & Thomas, A. (2020). Nurse staffing levels and 30-day patient outcomes. Journal of Nursing Care Quality, 35(2), 102-107. https://doi.org/10.1097/NCQ.0000000000000438
The study by Smith et al. (2020) used a quantitative, descriptive, correlational design to examine the relationship between nurse staffing levels and patient outcomes without inferring causation. Chapter 9 of the textbook discusses correlational designs and their use in examining relationships between variables without manipulation of an independent variable (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
The hypothesis of the Smith et al. (2020) study was that higher nurse staffing levels would be associated with lower patient mortality and failure to rescue rates within 30 days of admission.
The study collected data from an existing hospital database, which included information such as nurse staffing hours and patient outcomes like mortality and failure to rescue. Chapter 10 discusses using existing databases and records to collect quantitative data (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
Reliability and validity were not explicitly discussed in the study. Chapter 10 explains that reliability demonstrates the ability of an instrument to produce consistent results, while validity shows the instrument measures what it intends to measure (Fawcett & Garity, 2009). Established databases can have evidence of reliability and validity from prior use.
The sample included data on 500,000 patient admissions to 500 hospitals. Inclusion criteria were patients aged 18 and older admitted through the emergency department. Chapter 10 discusses sampling techniques for quantitative studies (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
The study used an existing database and did not require direct patient consent. Chapter 5 discusses ethical considerations like ensuring privacy of existing data (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
Data on nurse staffing hours, patient demographics, comorbidities, and outcomes were extracted from the hospital database. Chapter 10 discusses using existing records and databases for retrospective data collection (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
Outcomes of mortality and failure to rescue were analyzed using logistic regression to examine the relationship with nurse staffing hours while controlling for covariates. Chapter 14 discusses using logistic regression for this type of analysis (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
Higher nurse staffing levels were significantly associated with lower odds of patient mortality and failure to rescue. Chapter 15 discusses interpreting quantitative findings (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
For nursing education, findings highlight the importance of teaching appropriate nurse staffing practices and their impact on outcomes. For nursing practice, hospitals should consider evidence on appropriate staffing. For future research, studies should examine optimal staffing models and policies.
