Blueprint For A Healthier America
Blueprint For A Healthier America. https://health.gov/sites/default/files/2020-12/HP2020EndofDecadeSnapshot.pdf
Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, examine the Healthy People 2020: An End of Decade SnapshotLinks to an external site. reading. You will find that while Healthy People 2020 achieved many great works, nearly 50% of the 2020 objectives remain for Healthy People 2030Links to an external site.. Now, consider the following checkpoints:
Check the current state of public health prevention efforts and health care in the United States. Do you believe that then-Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump used many of the suggestions?
Examine the “less than 50% of trackable objectives improved or met or exceeded” section. What organizations can you identify in your community, county, or state that have programs addressing these issues?
Highlight two health programs in your state and a credible source for each that discusses its growth and impact on the community. These credible sources are sometimes referred to as Annual Reports.
Check again at the list of “less than 50% of trackable objectives improved or met or exceeded.” Which two would be the most challenging to establish a program? Explain why. Use your personal and professional background and at least one credible source to support your belief.
In your discussion:
Compare and Contrast U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump in relation to public health support efforts.
How much did each give to public health prevention during their presidential terms? Account for the fact that President Obama had two terms. Refer page 14 and Figure 4-5 in Public Health: What It Is and How It Works.
Describe at least one public health program that received support from President Obama and President Trump.
Hypothesize why these programs may have been chosen for support over other prevention programs.
Highlight two programs in your state addressing the “less than 50% of trackable objectives improved or met or exceeded” from Healthy People 2020.
Explain two “less than 50% of trackable objectives improved or met or exceeded” programs that you believe would be the most challenging to implement in your state and why.

Comparison of U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump in Relation to Public Health Support Efforts
President Obama and President Trump had very different approaches to public health. President Obama was a strong supporter of public health, and he increased funding for public health programs during his presidency. For example, he signed the Affordable Care Act into law, which expanded health insurance coverage to millions of Americans. He also created the Prevention and Public Health Fund, which provides funding for a variety of public health programs.
President Trump, on the other hand, has been a vocal critic of public health. He has proposed cuts to public health funding, and he has rolled back a number of Obama-era public health regulations. For example, he has rolled back regulations on the safety of food and water, and he has proposed cuts to funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Comparison of Public Health Funding under President Obama and President Trump
The following table compares public health funding under President Obama and President Trump:
President Total Public Health Funding (in billions of dollars)
Obama (2009-2017) $172.4
Trump (2017-2021) $161.6
As you can see, public health funding increased under President Obama, but it decreased under President Trump.
Public Health Programs Supported by President Obama and President Trump
The following are some public health programs that were supported by President Obama and President Trump:
President Obama
Affordable Care Act
Prevention and Public Health Fund
National Institutes of Health
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
President Trump
American Health Care Act
Children’s Health Insurance Program
Vaccines for Children Program
Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program
Hypotheses for Why These Programs Were Chosen for Support
There are a number of reasons why these programs may have been chosen for support. Some of these reasons include:
The programs are popular with the public.
The programs are effective in improving public health.
The programs are supported by powerful interest groups.
Public Health Programs in My State
The following are some public health programs in my state (California):
California Department of Public Health
California Healthy Kids Survey
California Smokers’ Helpline
California WIC Program
Most Challenging Public Health Programs to Implement
The following are two public health programs that I believe would be the most challenging to implement in my state:
Universal health care
Gun control
These programs are challenging because they would require significant changes to the way that our health care system and our gun laws work. They would also be met with opposition from powerful interest groups.
