With the increasing demand for global transportation, it has become more essential to ensure the safety and security of ships, crew members, and the environment. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive review of the maritime safety regimes’ current status and recommendations for improvement.

Overview of Maritime Safety Regimes

Maritime safety regimes comprise international regulations and guidelines developed to ensure the safety of vessels, their crews, and the environment. These regulations and guidelines are primarily established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations specialized agency responsible for developing and promoting safe, secure, and efficient shipping practices.

The IMO’s primary instrument for promoting maritime safety is the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). SOLAS sets minimum standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation, as well as safety management and environmental protection. Regulation of emerging technologies: The IMO should continue to monitor and regulate emerging technologies to ensure that they do not compromise maritime safety. The IMO should work with stakeholders to develop guidelines and standards for the use of these technologies in the maritime industry.

Increased collaboration and information sharing: The maritime industry should foster collaboration and information sharing among stakeholders to enhance safety. This includes sharing best practices, lessons learned, and incident reports. Additionally, the IMO should work with member states to develop a global reporting system for accidents and incidents.
