Clinical Supervision is an essential component of your development as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. It provides an opportunity for professional collaboration as you share experiences with and gain insights from colleagues. For this Clinical Supervision, consider a client whom you do not think is adequately progressing according to expected clinical outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
• Analyze clients presenting for treatment of anxiety disorders
• Evaluate effectiveness of therapeutic approaches for clients diagnosed with an anxiety disorder

• Reflect on a child or adolescent client you are currently counseling or have previously counseled at your practicum site who has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

Client Description

The client is a 12-year-old girl named Sarah. She was referred to me by her school counselor after she began to experience symptoms of anxiety, including difficulty concentrating, excessive worry, and physical symptoms such as stomachaches and headaches. Sarah’s anxiety has been interfering with her schoolwork and her social life. She has been avoiding social situations and has been spending more and more time in her room.

Therapeutic Approach

I began working with Sarah by using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is a type of therapy that focuses on changing the way people think and behave. In CBT, we worked together to identify Sarah’s negative thoughts and beliefs about herself and the world around her. We also worked on developing coping skills to help her manage her anxiety.

Perceived Effectiveness of Approach

I believe that my therapeutic approach has been effective in helping Sarah to manage her anxiety. She has been able to identify her negative thoughts and beliefs, and she has learned how to challenge them. She has also developed coping skills that she can use to manage her anxiety when it arises.

Additional Information

There are a few additional factors that may potentially impact expected outcomes for Sarah. First, she is a young adolescent, and this is a time of great change and stress for many young people. Second, Sarah’s family is supportive, but they are also struggling to cope with her anxiety. It is important to involve Sarah’s family in her treatment so that they can learn how to support her and help her to manage her anxiety.

Conclusion

I believe that Sarah is making progress in her treatment, and I am optimistic that she will continue to improve. However, it is important to remember that anxiety disorders are chronic conditions, and there is no cure. With ongoing treatment, Sarah can learn to manage her anxiety and live a full and productive life.
