Part 1: Applying Intervention and Remediation Strategies

Clinical Field Experience D: Applying Intervention And Remediation Strategies. Assessment Description

When teaching ELA, teachers must be mindful of the varying literacy skills and abilities each student possesses and create instruction and learning opportunities that can help students practice their skills, particularly when they are struggling with reading and writing. The ability to structure activities that allow students repeated practice in deficit literacy skill areas can lead to improvements and allow students to become proficient in reading and writing.

Allocate at least 4 hours in the field to support this field experience.

Part 1: Applying Intervention and Remediation Strategies

With the students you identified previously, implement the literacy intervention and remediation activities you designed in “Clinical Field Experience C: Research-Based Intervention and Remediation Strategies.” You should meet with the students at least twice, once to conduct the intervention activity and again to conduct the remediation activity with them so they can improve in the skills deficit areas.

Part 2: Mentor Debriefing

After each of the two sessions in which you implement the intervention and remediation activities, meet with your mentor to discuss and take notes about the following. You will submit a copy of your feedback notes.

Obtain feedback on the effectiveness of your implementation of the literacy intervention and remediation activities.
Discuss the students’ responses to the activities and what was effective in helping students practice their literacy skills.
Identify potential areas for change or improvement in the literacy intervention and remediation activities based on the student response and outcomes.
Use any remaining field experience hours to provide support or assistance to the class as directed by your mentor.

In a 250-500 word reflection, addressing the following:

Describe the results of implementing the literacy intervention and remediation activities with the students.
Reflect on your execution of the literacy intervention and remediation activities and their effectiveness. Include a discussion of both successes and challenges as well as changes you would make if implementing the activities again.
Submit the mentor debriefing notes and the reflection in a single document.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Document the locations and hours you spend in the field on your Clinical Field Experience Verification Form.

Submit the Clinical Field Experience Verification Form in the last topic. Directions for submitting can be found on the College of Education site in the Student Success Center.

Part 1: Applying Intervention and Remediation Strategies

I identified two students who were struggling with reading and writing. One student, named Sarah, was struggling with decoding words. The other student, named James, was struggling with writing mechanics.

For Sarah, I implemented an intervention activity called “Say It, See It, Spell It.” In this activity, I would say a word, then show her a picture of the word, and then have her spell the word. I did this activity with Sarah for 15 minutes a day, three times a week.

For James, I implemented a remediation activity called “Sentence Builders.” In this activity, I would give James a list of words and have him build sentences with the words. I did this activity with James for 20 minutes a day, three times a week.

Part 2: Mentor Debriefing

After each of the two sessions in which I implemented the intervention and remediation activities, I met with my mentor to discuss and take notes about the following.

Obtain feedback on the effectiveness of my implementation of the literacy intervention and remediation activities.
Discuss the students’ responses to the activities and what was effective in helping students practice their literacy skills.
Identify potential areas for change or improvement in the literacy intervention and remediation activities based on the student response and outcomes.
My mentor provided me with positive feedback on my implementation of the literacy intervention and remediation activities. She said that I was clear and concise in my instructions, and that I was patient and encouraging with the students. She also said that the students were engaged in the activities and that they seemed to be making progress.

I discussed the students’ responses to the activities with my mentor. Sarah seemed to be making good progress with decoding words. She was able to decode more words correctly after the intervention activity. James also seemed to be making progress with writing mechanics. He was able to write more complete sentences after the remediation activity.

I identified a few potential areas for change or improvement in the literacy intervention and remediation activities. For Sarah, I could try using different types of pictures to help her learn new words. For James, I could try using different types of sentence frames to help him write more complete sentences.

Reflection

I am pleased with the results of implementing the literacy intervention and remediation activities with the students. Sarah and James both seem to be making progress. I am confident that they will continue to improve their literacy skills with continued practice.

I am also pleased with my execution of the literacy intervention and remediation activities. I was able to implement the activities effectively and I was able to provide the students with the support they needed. I am confident that I can continue to provide effective literacy instruction to students in the future.

Here are some of the successes and challenges I faced in implementing the literacy intervention and remediation activities:

Successes:
The students were engaged in the activities.
The students seemed to be making progress.
I was able to provide the students with the support they needed.
Challenges:
It was difficult to find pictures that were appropriate for all of the words that I wanted to teach Sarah.
James sometimes had difficulty staying on task during the remediation activity.
If I were to implement the activities again, I would make the following changes:

I would try to find more appropriate pictures for Sarah.
I would try to find ways to make the remediation activity more engaging for James.
Overall, I am pleased with the results of implementing the literacy intervention and remediation activities with the students. I am confident that they will continue to improve their literacy skills with continued practice.
