Proposal for the Creation of a Nurse Informaticist Position

Write a 4-5 page evidence-based proposal to support the need for a nurse informaticist in an organization who would focus on improving health care outcomes. Introduction As you begin to prepare this assessment, you are encouraged to complete the Team Perspectives of the Nurse Informaticist activity. Completion of this will help you succeed with the assessment as you explore the nurse informaticist’s role from the different perspectives of the health care team. Completing activities is also a way to demonstrate engagement. Nurses at the baccalaureate level in all practice areas are involved in nursing informatics through interaction with information management and patient care technologies. Nurses must not only demonstrate knowledge of and skills in health information and patient care technologies, but also how to use these tools at the bedside and organizational levels. Moreover, nurses need to recognize how information gathered from various health information sources can impact decision making at the national and state regulatory levels.
Scenario For this assessment, assume you are a nurse attending a meeting of your state’s nurses association. A nurse informaticist conducted a presentation on her role and its impact on positive patient and organizational outcomes in her workplace. You realize that your organization is undergoing many technological changes. You believe this type of role could provide many benefits to your organization. You decide to pursue proposing a nurse informaticist role in your organization. You speak to your chief nursing officer (CNO) and human resources (HR) manager, who ask you to prepare a 4–5 page evidence-based proposal to support the new role. In this way, they can make an informed decision as to whether the addition of such a role could justify the return on investment (ROI). They need your proposal before an upcoming fiscal meeting. This is not an essay, but instead, it is a proposal to create a new Nurse Informaticist position. One important part of this assessment is the justification of the need for a nurse informaticist in a health care organization and references from relevant and timely scholarly or professional resources to support the justification for creating this nurse informaticist position. The term justify means to show or prove that the nurse informaticist position brings value to the organization. This justification must include evidence from the literature to support that this position will provide a return on investment for the organization.

Proposal for the Creation of a Nurse Informaticist Position

Introduction

As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, the need for nurses with expertise in informatics is growing. Nurse informaticists are healthcare professionals who use information technology to improve the quality of patient care. They work with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers to design, implement, and evaluate healthcare information systems.

Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist

Nursing informatics is a rapidly growing field that combines nursing, computer science, and information science. Nurse informaticists use their knowledge of nursing, information technology, and healthcare to improve the quality of patient care. They do this by:

Designing and implementing healthcare information systems
Developing and evaluating clinical decision support tools
Conducting research on the use of technology in healthcare
Educating nurses and other healthcare providers about the use of technology
Nurse Informaticists and Other Health Care Organizations

Nurse informaticists are employed in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and universities. They work in a variety of roles, including:

Clinical nurse informaticists, who work directly with nurses to improve the use of technology in patient care
Informatics educators, who teach nurses and other healthcare providers about the use of technology
Informatics researchers, who conduct research on the use of technology in healthcare
Impact of Full Nurse Engagement in Health Care Technology

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that full nurse engagement in health care technology can have a positive impact on patient care. For example, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association found that hospitals with high levels of nurse engagement in electronic health record (EHR) implementation had lower rates of patient readmission and mortality (1).

Opportunities and Challenges

The addition of a nurse informaticist role to a healthcare organization can offer a number of opportunities, including:

Improved patient care: Nurse informaticists can help to improve the quality of patient care by designing and implementing healthcare information systems that support evidence-based practice.
Reduced costs: Nurse informaticists can help to reduce costs by identifying and eliminating inefficiencies in the use of technology.
Improved safety: Nurse informaticists can help to improve patient safety by identifying and mitigating risks associated with the use of technology.
However, there are also some challenges associated with the addition of a nurse informaticist role, including:

Cost: The cost of hiring and training a nurse informaticist can be significant.
Time: It can take time for a nurse informaticist to learn the specific needs of a healthcare organization and to implement changes.
Resistance to change: Some nurses may be resistant to change and may not be willing to adopt new technologies.
Summary of Recommendations

In conclusion, there are a number of opportunities and challenges associated with the addition of a nurse informaticist role to a healthcare organization. However, the evidence suggests that the benefits of having a nurse informaticist on staff outweigh the costs. I recommend that the CNO and HR manager approve the creation of a nurse informaticist position.
