Week 2 – Discussion 1: Hope & Altruism

The interrelationships within the school organization can be reviewed by assessing the collaboration and communication between different departments, teachers, administrators, and support staff. This involves identifying areas where improvements can be made to foster a more supportive and inclusive school environment.

Regarding the community, school counselors may engage with local organizations, agencies, and community leaders to establish partnerships that provide additional resources and support for students and their families. This collaboration can include programs and services that address students’ academic, social, emotional, and physical needs.

Week 2 – Discussion 2: Boundaries
Ethical standards play a crucial role in the practice of school counseling. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) provides ethical standards for school counselors to guide their professional behavior. When it comes to boundaries, one specific ethics code that is important to be included in the standards is maintaining confidentiality.

Confidentiality is vital in building trust with students and their families. School counselors should clearly communicate to students and their families the limits of confidentiality, ensuring that sensitive information shared during counseling sessions remains private, with exceptions only in cases where there is a risk of harm to the student or others.

By including a clear and comprehensive code of ethics regarding boundaries and confidentiality, school counselors can establish professional guidelines that promote a safe and trusting environment for students to seek counseling services. This helps maintain the integrity of the counseling relationship and ensures that students feel comfortable sharing their concerns without fear of unauthorized disclosure.
