Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)
Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a severe complication of dengue infection, a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. DHF can cause serious bleeding, shock, organ failure and death. It is more common in people who have been infected with a different serotype of dengue virus before (“secondary infection”). DHF affects millions of people worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions.
DHF usually starts with a high fever and flu-like symptoms, such as headache, eye pain, muscle or joint pain, and nausea or vomiting. Some people may also develop a rash or bleed easily from the gums or nose. After a few days, the fever goes down, but the blood vessels become leaky and fluid accumulates in the abdomen or around the lungs. This can lead to low blood pressure, shock, and organ damage. DHF can be fatal if not treated promptly and properly.
There is no specific treatment for DHF, only supportive care to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. This may include intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, oxygen therapy, and pain relievers. Antibiotics are not effective against dengue virus. The best way to prevent DHF is to avoid mosquito bites and to control the mosquito population. There is also a vaccine for dengue infection, but it is not widely available or recommended for everyone.
DHF is a serious public health problem that requires more research and awareness. If you have been to an area where dengue is endemic and you develop symptoms of DHF, seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can save your life.
