If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the readings, ask questions of each other, etc.The theory that I find most hrlpful and effective is the family systems theory.In this theory the family is viewed as a whole unit through which each member influences the others.The nurses view the individual as a functioning and contributing member of a large family.This theory argues that in order to understand an individual  we must look at the family as whole.Individual family members and the subsytems that compose the family system are influenced by and are mutually dependent upon each other.The other premise of this theory is that families are dynamic in nature and that they help each other meet challenges associated with daily living and the developmental growth of the family members.   This theory is helpful and appealing to me as a nurse since each patient is a product of their upbringing.This theory helps to put into account  the patient family history and its impact on the current illness.In cases like substance abuse its easier to obtain pertinent information from the family rather than the individual patient and this helps in formulating treatment mordalities.The availability of the family members will also help in getting information about patient adherence to treatment and this helps especially in discharge planning.The theory also focuses on how family members help each other to meet their challenges.In practice patient with established family support get better faster than the ones who are alone.The family provides moral support helps in making decision that the patient is otherwise unable to make.
