Similarly, professional practices and scholarly ethics are intertwined. Nurses are expected to uphold ethical standards in both their clinical practice and academic work. For example, obtaining informed consent from patients is a fundamental ethical practice that mirrors the need for proper citation and attribution in academic writing (Milton, 2019). Scholarly ethics, such as honesty and transparency, are directly transferable to professional nursing practice, where nurses must document patient care accurately and ethically.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis
My approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research involves searching for articles in reputable journals such as the American Journal of Nursing and Psychiatric Annals. I use databases like PubMed and Google Scholar to filter for peer-reviewed articles that are relevant to my topic of interest.
One effective strategy I use is setting specific search criteria, such as publication date (within the last five years) and keywords related to my topic. Another strategy is reviewing the references of relevant articles to find additional sources.
In the future, I intend to use the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) as a resource for finding peer-reviewed research. This journal provides access to a wide range of nursing topics and is a reliable source of evidence-based information.
Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.

Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
My first nursing specialty is Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and my second preference is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The PMHNP role focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with mental health disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety, and substance abuse. PMHNPs work in various settings, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and correctional facilities. They often work independently, depending on state regulations, and provide both individual and group therapy.
In contrast, the FNP role focuses on providing primary care to individuals and families across the lifespan. FNPs emphasize preventive care and health promotion, often working in family clinics and underserved communities. While FNPs can work independently in some states, they typically collaborate with physicians to provide comprehensive care.
The key differentiator for me is the focus on mental health in the PMHNP role. I am particularly interested in understanding the causes of mental illness and developing treatment plans that improve patients’ quality of life. This focus aligns with my personal experiences and career goals, making PMHNP the right choice for me.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty
I have chosen the PMHNP specialization because of my passion for mental health care. My interest in this field was sparked by personal experiences with family members who struggled with mental health issues. I want to help individuals overcome mental health challenges and lead fulfilling lives. The PMHNP role allows me to combine my clinical skills with my desire to make a meaningful impact on patients’ mental well-being.
Step 3: Professional Organizations
The professional organization I have selected is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). To become a member, I will complete the online membership application, provide proof of my nursing license, and pay the membership fee. Membership in the APNA will provide access to resources, continuing education opportunities, and networking events that will support my professional growth as a PMHNP.
